Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O'Donnell is back as prison officer Rose in series two of Channel 4's Screw - and reveals that she heard from real-life prison guards ahead of filming
Jamie-Lee O’Donnell has opened up about returning to her role in Channel 4 drama Screw - revealing that she receiving letters from prison officers ahead of filming series two.
“Leigh wants to stay mentoring Rose and to keep her on the trajectory that she needs to be on,” added Nina. “She also needs to integrate the new prisoners coming in, they bring with them new challenges – so Leigh is sort of a swan. She’s trying to keep everything on an even keel but underneath she’s paddling like mad.”
“Toby’s death has really changed Don’s outlook on his job,” explained Ron Donachie, who plays veteran officer Don Carpenter. “It’s made him realise that he was just coasting towards the end of his time as a prison officer hoping he could pick up his pension with as little trouble as possible. But the volatility and the sheer sense of danger means he’s had to readjust his outlook.”
“It’s a sort of forgotten area of our community. We choose to completely and utterly ignore it and forget about those people, forgetting they grow and change and are living right now. They don’t stop because we’re not thinking about them, and there’s a huge lack of respect for the people looking after them, doing that job.”
“In terms of preparing for the role, it was lots of reading accounts of life inside and it’s quite interesting being there,” says Lee. “We’re all designed to move, and when you’ve got inhibitors put on and limitations of where you can and can’t go, it’s little surprise that people suffer mentally. You’re constantly learning and surprised by the scripts and the reality. It was a fascinating and enjoyable job.
