Foreign Secretary James Cleverly swerved questions about whether the Government would U-turn on freezing corporation tax following market turmoil caused by the mini-Budget.
at a bruising 1922 Committee meeting last night, as she faces mounting pressure to balance the books after financial markets went into meltdown following Mr Kwarteng’s uncosted tax cuts.he “absolutely thinks” that the cut on the basic rate of income tax and the 1.25 per cent National Insurance reversal should be kept,Mr Cleverly said: “Ultimately, what that mini-Budget was about, we should remind ourselves, was about protecting tens of millions of people from unaffordable energy prices.
“It was about making sure that taxes for 30 million working people were reduced a little bit. And those are really strong principles that I absolutely think we should stick with.” Asked if there would be any more reversals, including on corporation tax, he responded that the Chancellor would make a statement on 31 October which gave a “more holistic assessment of the public finances”.
Pressed again on a mooted U-turn, he added: “We’ve made it clear that we want to invest in businesses. They have been under a huge amount of pressure. It’s absolutely right that we help them stay competitive. “We help them stay afloat, that we help them compete internationally, employ people and pay better wages and that’s the kind of thing that we should be doing and that’s why the package the Chancellor put forward is pro growth and is the right answer.”
