As he prepares for the 10th anniversary reissue of his self-titled debut album, Jake Bugg speaks with Shaun Curran about anxiety, class, and why he believes this Government has got to go

Jake Bugg has been getting panic attacks before going on stage. “I’ve just had a bit of anxiety,” he says. “It never used to happen. You just want to go on there and do your best, really. But a few songs in, it goes away., Wet Leg and Arlo Parks have all cancelled tours this year to protect their wellbeing.

It never used to be this hard: after his 2012 breakthrough, Bugg was playing 300 shows a year. Back then, he was an 18-year-old phenomenon. His Mercury-nominated first album sold more than a million copies, and made him the youngest ever male artist to debut at No 1. “I wrote those at home on the estate at 16, neighbours banging on the walls telling me to keep it down,” he smiles.

“I don’t like to give much away,” he says. “I like to be quite serious, because life is serious. And I take what I do very seriously.” That is certainly true: later he will tell me that “music is the most important thing, above even my own life to a point. Because music is for everybody. It lives beyond you.”

I suggest that pop’s current cultural dominance means that this argument has been well and truly lost. “But I think everything is just heading towards a generic centre, whether that’s pop music or high streets all having the same coffee shops. Everything is more commercialised these days.”
