Millions of people travel from the UK to Italy each year
The Government department regularly updates its advice for people visiting any one of 226 countries and territories. Alerts make reference to things such a safety risks, extreme weather, and illness outbreaks, among others.
This week, the Foreign Office issued a warning as severe weather conditions are expected in some popular Italian resorts.Gov.uk guidance states: "Severe weather conditions are expected in the coming days in the south of Italy, particularly in Calabria and Sicily." It then links to the website of Italy's Civil Protection Department which warns of "heavy showers, hailstorms, frequent electrical activity and strong gusts of wind".
The weather warning comes as extreme rain also batters Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. On Wednesday, Jet2 was forced to cancel a number of flights as it made a "difficult decision". The travel operator issued an update after it was forced to cancel planned trips to Skiathos on Wednesday .
