💤 Sleepless nights ☎️ 3am phonecalls 🗣️ And personal attacks from Government Two lawyers challenging the Rwanda policy tell mollyblackall about their year on the case

The Rwandan Government has said it takes issue with the ruling, insisting asylum seekers would be welcomed and supported in the country, while UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he “fundamentally disagrees” with the verdict.

In June 2022, the Home Office placed a group of asylum seekers including Mr Merriman’s client on a plane at Boscombe Down military airbase, and were just minutes away from sending them to Rwanda when“It felt like coming back from the brink,” he says. “The European Court called me at 10pm saying that they had just told the Home Office that an intervention had been made and the plane should not take off.

The challenge’s lawyers are also seeking to appeal parts of this week’s ruling, including the court’s finding that relocating asylum seekers to a safe country overseas would be in line with the Refugee Convention, which was hailed as a partial victory for the Government despite the immediate setback for the Rwanda plan.

Throughout the process, he has been guided by his own family’s experience of seeking refugee in the UK: his grandmother arrived in Britain as a Jewish refugee. She has been following the case closely and will no doubt do the same if it winds up in the Supreme Court.Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: “The British people want to stop the boats, and so does this Government. That’s what I am determined to deliver and I won’t take a backward step from that.
