It's thought that as many as 572 schools in the UK were built using Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete
Parents in Lancashire have spoken of their anger at a "last minute shambles" which has resulted in more than 100 schools across the UK being told to partially or fully close.
In Fulwood, Preston, Our Lady’s Catholic High School and Fulwood Academy are closed. Meanwhile Bispham Endowed Primary in Blackpool has seen its hall taken out of use as a precaution. Schools with RAAC only have to close or partially close if they do not have safety measures in place and cannot make alternative arrangements - such as converting other parts of the building into temporary classrooms or moving children to another site.
"It's bad enough for the children; it's like lockdown all over again, but also what about the parents who work? Are they just, yet again, expected to have to take time off work to look after the kids? The risks of RAAC – whose make-up has been likened to an Aero chocolate bar – have been known about for several years. Two school roofs collapsed in 2017 and 2018 but the government says that the recent decision to close RAAC facilities came after a change in advice which it received this summer.
Janet Trafford, who lives in Ribbleton and was visiting the St Catherine's Hospice charity shop near Our Lady's, said: "It's such a shame for the children. It's just a terrible situation for everyone involved. If it started to affect hospitals as well, like is being reported, then I dread to think what will happen."
