Is Nigeria Becoming a Failed State? lyndon_mukasa assesses the evidence
THE FEDERAL Republic of Nigeria is often considered to be the “giant of Africa” due to its huge population and large economy.
However in recent years Nigeria has come under increasing strains stemming from security challenges that could threaten the viability of the Nigerian state in the 21st century. , and the Islamic State in West Africa Province in the northeast where over 40,000 people have been killed and 300,000 displaced.
It is widely believed these issues have been exacerbated by the unequal distribution of wealth in Nigeria due to corruption and mismanagement. Many hope that with the upcoming elections in 2023 that things could change but the problems are very complex and multifaceted and are unlikely to be solved with a new leader.
