The UK is failing to prepare today's young people to become tomorrow's leaders – and the gap is only becoming wider

. But any political party serious about running the country needs a plan to invest in Britain’s future talent .This Sunday, one person themay not be able to rely on is my younger daughter. Her support has been mixed. She enjoys playing football but dislikes England scoring goals – because the cheering is too loud.

So we have not yet felt able to share the news that the World Cup final clashes with the start of her birthday party. At the age of four, one does not always take such grim tidings in one’s stride. Take the morning of her actual birthday. She woke up furious, feeling betrayed by grown-ups’ promises, and confused that she remained the same size. “But I thought I was going to be BIGGER today!”
