“I’m not interested in beauty for the sake of frivolity. I’m interested in it for the sake of: What are we saying about the way we, Black people, are living? What are we saying about the way things are for Black people?”

Most people became familiar with the Atlanta-born, New York-based photographer in 2018 when, at the age of 23, he made history as the first Black photographer to shoot the cover of American. Since then, his clients have included some of fashion’s most lauded brands: Gucci, Loewe, Simone Rocha, JW Anderson, Prada… He is signed to the Jack Shainman Gallery, the home of some of the world’s most influential Black artists, including Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Kerry James Marshall.

October will be a busy month for Mitchell. Next week, he will be debuting new works at Frieze Masters in London which explore “the historic and contemporary relationships between young Black men and landscapes”. At the end of the month, meanwhile, his images will be featured alongside other celebrated young Black photographers in Saatchi Gallery’s. The show’s curator, author and Gagosian director Antwaun Sargent describes Mitchell as “one of the defining photographers of his generation”.

Mitchell is thoughtful for a moment as he considers how the weight of his success rests on his shoulders. “To be honest,” he says earnestly, “I try not to think about it… I love making pictures so much, so I’m really oriented around just being able to make work freely.” His experience of rejection not so long ago has forced Mitchell not to take anything for granted. “I started coming to London five years ago, trying to really pitch myself… People were not really picking up on what I was doing.
