Richard Caswell betrayed a feared organised crime group and is understood to be a 'target' behind bars
Early one spring morning in 2020, with the UK still in the grip of the first coronavirus lockdown, a white van pulled up outside a semi-detached house in West Derby.
What the two victims did not mention was the fact the attackers had left the scene with a bag containing around 30kg of cocaine worth around £1million - the criminal property of their fearsome bosses. Jason Cox also asked his brother, Lee Cox, whether he could help him rent a flat in case the Liverpool firm worked out they were behind the robbery. However, he also bragged: "I know where the main man lives, I go n empty full clip in his face show them old c**** what time it is."
All three men used the pricey EncroChat phones to conduct their business. As is now well documented, that system was hacked by the French authorities in early 2020, giving the police unrestricted access to all their messages. Caswell said he would look into it and asked how much the group were selling for. He was told £41,000, and that it would have to be picked up from Liverpool.
The pair discussed whether the Liverpool firm would be "wary" of tracking devices, and Caswell said: Yes. They have been at it for years. If they suspected us, they would want to put us on lie detector. We need to be spot on with this." The fall-out when the facts became known was seismic in the underworld. Arson attacks at properties linked to the Cox family were reported to Greater Manchester Police, while Caswell was slashed in HMP Manchester. Caswell did not co-operate with an investigation into that incident.
"We do know that once the Liverpool OCG found out about the Cox's involvement there were then a number of arson attacks in Salford against vehicles and premises linked to the Cox family, while Jason and Lee were in Spain."
