Philippe Clement bombed Siebe Schrijvers out of two different teams in Belgium but his former player still has nothing bad to say about him.
That the former Genk and Club Brugge ace doesn’t is down to the fact he simply can’t argue with his old boss and his knack of picking a winning team. It all started so well between the midfielder and the man who has this week been appointed Rangers boss, with Schrijvers starting 24 out of Clement’s first 25 games in charge of Genk when he took over as Smurfs gaffer back in 2017.
But as he told Record Sport, nothing could be further from the truth. "Philippe was my manager at Genk, I had him for one year before I moved to Brugge,” he explained. “I was then there for a season before he joined me again, so I have some experience with him. Having dominated domestically, Clement is now set on proving himself abroad. An 18-month spell with Monaco brought Champions League qualification and a third-place finish before he was sacked in the summer after a difficult second season hampered by the sale of £150million worth of talent.
“He’s proven he can bring success, even with smaller clubs. That’s the special thing about him. We’ve seen that it’s not so easy for Belgian coaches to be successful in other countries but he deserved the chance to go to Monaco and show his qualities in a bigger competition. I think he’ll want to show that he can win in another country.”
