Adam Johnson died after an incident in the game between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers
An inquest is due to open into the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson, who died after suffering a cut to the throat during a Nottingham Panthers game. Johnson, 29, was struck by an opponent's skate during the Challenge Cup tie between the Panthers and Sheffield Steelers on Saturday, October 28.
The stadium was evacuated as medics tended to Johnson on the ice. He was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead. The inquest into his death will be opened at the Medico-Legal Centre in Sheffield on Friday, November 3 at 9am. South Yorkshire Police said it was consulting "highly-specialised experts" amid a range of inquiries into Johnson's death and said its investigation remained "ongoing".The Panthers described the incident as a "freak accident" when they confirmed Johnson's death in a statement on Sunday, October 29.
The club has also invited ice hockey fans and anyone affected by the tragedy to attend a memorial event at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday, November 4, one week after the incident. The Panthers said on Tuesday that fans would be invited on to the ice to sign a book of condolence at Saturday's event, which is due to start at 5.30pm.
Releasing further details on Wednesday, November 1, the club said a two-minute silence would also be held at 8.20pm. "This will be a quiet night of reflection but it will also be a time to be together and a chance for people to talk to each other," reads a statement on the club website.
