Andy Malkinson, 57, was found guilty of raping a woman in 2003 but had his conviction quashed on Wednesday thanks to DNA evidence
An innocent man who served 17 years behind bars for a rape he did not commit says he may have to pay thousands of pounds to the prison service for "board and lodgings". Andy Malkinson, 57, was found guilty of raping a woman in Salford in 2003.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4 this morning, Mr Malkinson said: "Somehow the prison service has lobbied the Government in the early 2000s. The result is that even if you fight tooth and nail and gain compensation you then have to pay the prison service a large chunk of that for so-called 'board and lodgings', which is so abhorrent to me. I am sickened by it."
"The idea of lying in a group and listening to horrific stories and pretending I'd done something as horrific as that I couldn't even contemplate it." But Mr Malkinson, who described the apology as "hollow" and accused GMP of a "deliberate" cover-up, said: "Since 2009, it's been known that there was an 'unknown male's' DNA on a crime specific area. Greater Manchester Police have wantonly and systematically destroyed that evidence - the clothing the victim wore on that night. You can't dress that up as a mistake, that's deliberate. I believe that force is just corrupt. It's a hollow apology.
