Mike Burrows was woken up by a knock at the door before police said they suspected his car had been involved in a robbery
A man claims he was kept in a police cell for four hours and feared he would spend years behind bars after the police suddenly knocked on his door.
He asked neighbours for their Ring doorbell footage, showing him parked outside his house at 4.15am - the time of the alleged offence - and that officers later contacted him to tell him they suspected his car had been 'cloned' and that the investigation into him would be dropped. "I was confused, but I knew I had done nothing wrong at this point. I'm a carer and need a clean DBS. They told me that I had allegedly been involved in a robbery. They said they had evidence of my car being there.
Although the registration plates and make of car were the same, Mike says he noticed some initial aesthetic differences between the car in the footage and his own, such as the wing screen mirror having a cover - which his car doesn't have. "I went to bed that night and I was exhausted. I woke up and knew I had to prove my innocence. I went around seven different neighbours if that had any way of proving I was at home and one showed I returned home at 3.45am so I sent that to the police."
"Now I have been given the all clear I can get my life rebuilt from the stress and upset this has caused me. Car cloning is a very real and very dangerous thing."
