India's Twitter-killer Koo is threatening Musk’s crown, but it should give users pause 🔍 Analysis by stokel
Founded in 2019 and launched in March 2020, the app has grown a significant following in its native India, and has made one of its first international outposts Brazil, where it packed on a million downloads in just 48 hours after launching there earlier this week.
“If Twitter becomes weak, people look for alternatives. They will go to Koo, which is expanding quite well. It’s an opportunity for Koo. If they can strike when the iron is hot, they can get a disproportionate reward right now.” “There are established processes and legal obligations for US-based companies to remove and report illegal content like child abuse images and terrorist propaganda, and mechanisms for that information to be shared with authorities in other countries. There are no such arrangements for Indian platforms, or Chinese platforms for that matter.”
The lack of a formal Indian data protection act also worries privacy expert Pat Walshe. “From a privacy perspective, it’s important to consider that the government has yet to introduce a data protection act imposing clear obligations and providing rights for individuals,” he says. “This is important when considering the data the app collects.”
