The historic mission is seen as crucial to lunar exploration

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft landed on the lunar south pole at just after 6pm New Delhi time on Wednesday, sparking cheers and applause among the space scientists watching in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru.“India is on the moon,” declared Sreedhara Somanath, chairman of Isro.

Rough terrain on the Moon’s south pole makes landing difficult, but scientists believe the region holds water ice that could supply fuel, oxygen and drinking water for future missions. Excitement reached fever pitch in India on Wednesday in anticipation of the Moon landing, with banner headlines across newspapers and media channels running countdown timers.
