The trams ceased operation in 1954

The tram network expanded rapidly, covering much of the city and it's neighbourhoods. It became the backbone of our public transport system, carrying passengers to work and leisure destinations. The red and cream trams became iconic, and the familiar rattle and hum were the soundtrack of daily life.

Like all good things, they don't last forever and so with the rise of private cars and the introduction of trolley busses, tram usage declined and by the 1950s, the tracks were torn up. The last tram rolled through our streets in 1954, marking the end of an era. Today, you can still see remnants of the tramlines in the form of preserved trams at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra.Check out our gallery below and let us know your thoughts in the comments!
