The demolition plans have been the subject of local opposition
The demolition of a number of tower blocks in Newtownabbey has started.
The Housing Executive also plans to demolish Abbotscoole House in the area with both sites earmarked for social housing developments.Plans to demolish the 65 flat Monkscoole House were met with local opposition due to the demand for housing in the area. However, the Housing Executive estimate that it would cost in excess of £308 million to bring all 33 of their tower blocks up to modern standards.
