A rare blue supermoon could exacerbate flooding from Hurricane Idalia, which is expected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday
Idalia strengthened to a dangerous Category 3 storm early on Wednesday as it headed towards Florida’s Big Bend region, the National Hurricane Centre said.
It is expected to make tidal flooding worse not only in Florida, but in states such as Georgia and South Carolina that will also be hit by Idalia. The storm surge is often the greatest killer when hurricanes strike. The ocean water pouring on to land could be up to 4.6 metres high along parts of Florida’s west coast, the National Hurricane Centre projected in its latest briefings on Tuesday. Further south, up to 2.1m of storm surge is expected in the Tampa Bay area.
After landing in the Big Bend region, Idalia is forecast to cross the Florida peninsula and then drench southern Georgia and the Carolinas on Thursday.
