Iconic West Indian Community Centre at Carmoor Road spared from demolition as fresh plans for huge new student digs revealed
A community centre in south Manchester which plays a 'vital' part of life for the Windrush Generation has been spared after plans for student flats on the site were revised. Developers initially proposed to demolish the West Indian Community Centre on Carmoor Road in Longsight.
Communal areas, a fitness centre, outdoor landscaped space and 68 cycle storage spaces would also be built. "Our proposals are just a stone's throw away from university campuses and would help to meet the growing need for dedicated student accommodation in Manchester. We have listened carefully to the local community and will not be including the West Indian Community Centre as part of the redevelopment.
Anthony Brown, a long-term member and former chairman of the West Indian Community Centre, says he welcomes the change, but still has a number of concerns about the plans. He said: "When the current student accommodation was built it created a lot of problems for the centre around noise pollution.
