When I arrived and made my way to Tower Festival Headland in Blackpool it was crisp day, with a slight breeze, blue skies punctured with the odd fluffy white cloud and the sun was beaming down giving me a wintry hug. Not even half an hour later I was being battered by icy sleet blowing from all directions, the sky now Scroogesque gloom.
There's wood cabins selling food and drink, including mulled wine and churros, stocking fillers, a free ice rink, festive light projections and Christmas-themed fairground-rides more suited to little thrill seekers. I'd already strolled through the cabins and enjoyed what was on offer, so there was no more putting it off, a seat on the Star Flyer had my name on it.
I will not patronise you by telling you it is high, because that is clear, but I've been up to the highest external viewing spot of Blackpool Tower and this, due to the carriage constantly swaying in the wind and the speed it was rotating, made it a far more unpleasant experience. I have experienced a strikingly similar sensation before, though, when I climbed to the top of The Big One, with the steel frame of the coaster constantly wobbling, more rigorously the higher we went.
It was like watching an impending thunderstorm rapidly close in on a disaster movie, but it defied all logic as instead of shattering my nerves further, it ended up proving me with a brilliant memory. The journey down was relatively serene in comparison to the ascent and despite genuinely enjoying moments of the ride, I was more than happy to put my feet back onto solid ground.
