I spent five years meeting people radicalised online – this is what I learned about social media 🔎 sarahmanavis

While people do create echo chambers and a feed can, at times, show more harmful content, they found neither of these things “detectably” impacted people’s pre-existing beliefs.

Firstly, all four are part of a collaborative project between Meta and a team of American academic investigators, in which the researchers were given access to substantial amounts of Facebook and Instagram data. However, though they did not have a final say over the studies’ conclusions, Meta did control how much access researchers had, arguing they had to set boundaries in order to maintain user privacy. They also paid for the research .

The same goes for most popular conspiracy theories; even the less dangerous ideas which have shifted the Overton window over the last few years. Speak to anyone who has watched someone become radicalised online and they will tell you that, while this person may now express their radical views on Facebook or Instagram, neither of these platforms was where this person had their mind changed. The wedge we see is typically driven from elsewhere.
