Through my 20s I assumed that I’d never have children but I also didn’t dwell on it too much, as it seemed like such a long way off. At that time things never got serious enough with any of my girlfriends to have the big “do you want kids” talk, so I was able to ignore the topic, which to be honest I was glad about.
About a year into our relationship, around the time she turned 30, she asked me whether I’d ever want children, because it was something she was fairly sure she’d want one day. It was a difficult, stressful conversation, and when I said that I wasn’t sure, she looked really upset, and I remember her saying to me that however much she loved me and saw a future with me, having kids to her was so important that we’d have to end things if I said no to becoming a father.
We moved in together, got married and kept on having a really good relationship. Of course it had its ups and downs but we were happy, and we had adventures around the world. After a few years, on her 34th birthday trip to Venice, my wife said that she was really wanting to start trying for a baby.
