I am child-free, firstly by choice and now by circumstance, following a hysterectomy in 2021 to cure two decades of gynaecological issues. After the surgery, I find it much easier to say that I can’t have children than the truth: I never really wanted them. It invitesI’ve been upfront with every romantic partner about my desire not to have children, and most have accepted that.
Parenthood still feels like the default when I speak to people my age, and I am a little tired of the sympathetic head tilt from new acquaintances when asked if I have children and I respond, “No.” I know I will never understand the intricacies and frustrations of. Still, I know what it’s like to be a caregiver, having nursed my mother at the end of her life and regularly caring for my chronically ill father. Just because I am child-free, I am not free from responsibility.
Attitudes towards childbearing are slowly changing though, with each generation waiting longer to start a family or remaining child-free. Figures from the Office for National Statisticsthat half of women born in 1990 remained childless by their 30th birthday. Of women born in 1975 who had completed their childbearing years in 2020, 18 per cent were childless, compared with 13 per cent of their mothers’ generation.
