'He would have left if it had it not been for the pull of the spread of food available during the break'

A Lancashire expat who joined what he thought was a course to help him quit smoking ended up embroiled in a Canadian cult, he has revealed.

A couple of days later, Ian attended a meeting at a hotel in Toronto with hundred other people. In the days between the chance conversation on the street and the hotel meeting he researched the group but it had changed name so often, that the name they approached him with, had no issues or complaints linked to it.

By now, Ian was completely hooked in. “They had me hook line and sinker,” Ian said. "They had me completely by the Saturday midday on the four day course. I was as good as theirs. Over the following few weeks Ian’s life changed it forever, he spent all of his time with 'the Institute', helping raise money and he also recruited five more people. He even took part in their community outreach - something he described as a sham to improve their respectability.
