Somewhere in the middle of a nine-hour bus journey from Tauranga to Wellington, I began to feel like I might be doing the whole solo female travel thing wrong.
And there were many other moments that nothing in the solo female traveller genre has yet captured: the comic confusion at petrol stations, despondency in empty hostels, and regret on poorly oriented hikes in unrelenting rainstorms.
So, no, I did not have some great spiritual awakening nor moment of self-discovery nor life-altering romance on my travels, but by the end of my nine-hour bus journey, I realised I simply did not care, as long as I was out of that coach. And maybe that was okay.
Sure, self-discovery on the road is possible – but no more so than it is in day-to-day life. Solo travel is just a concentrated form of your usual experience of the world. Removed from your routine, you experience moments of abject normality in a more intense, vivid way.
