Christie Newport's condition was so painful she considered ending her life

A woman considered 'assisted suicide' after a childhood cold sore turned out to be from a rare condition so painful it felt like her head was stuck in a 'mechanical vice.'

“Even though the medication is working for me now, it won’t forever, and I can already feel that it’s starting to weaken.” “It dates right back to primary school really, but I continued writing stories and reading all the way through high school, college and university,” she said. “I used to sit at the back of my lectures writing micro fiction, instead of doing what I should have been doing.”

Soon after graduating, while writing her first unpublished book, she met her now wife, Amy – an award-winning artist. But Christie’s health took a “nose dive” and she would spend the next few years in and out of hospital. “We set up a fundraiser but I didn’t expect people to be so generous and we actually reached our target in a couple of months,” she said. “We didn’t know that it would definitely help, but I hoped it would.Soon, Christie’s health began to deteriorate once again. “I was in and out of hospital again, I was having blood transfusions, iron infusions, surgeries,” she said.

She was able to attend the Capital Crime book festival in London with Amy, who had bought tickets for her birthday. “I went there and I was in a wheelchair, but it felt like I was being pumped full of adrenaline because I was surrounded by my writing heroes,” Christie said.
