Owing a Christmas shop isn't as easy as they thought!
“Since I began running the Cotswolds Christmas shop with my two best friends Mandy and Sarah, I’ve kind of felt like my life is a Christmas movie. Pretty much 365 days per year I’m surrounded by festivities, and it’s hard to be sad.
In February 2021 we picked up the keys, but Covid-19 meant that we didn't open up fully until months later. We used that time to redecorate and launch our website. We each have other jobs on top of this - Sarah is an Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Mandy works for Thames Water and I work in consultancy – so it's a lot to take on. Luckily, we have a strong friendship which helps us cope with the stress.
We’ve owned the shop for around two years now, and we have to implement one important rule - no Christmas music until October! It was driving us mad having it on constantly. At the shop I get to be part of those traditions – like the people who come in and buy all their family a little decoration each year. One customer asked me to write a lovely message for her dad, who'd passed away that year, on a bauble. I’m glad that the decoration brings a little bit of comfort.
But probably the best thing for me is when we’re all in the shop together - Mandy, Sarah and me. Not everyone can say they work with their best friends.
