The event is held every year in Rossendale
Hundreds of wrestling fans turned out to watch people in fancy dress writhe around in warm gravy for the World Gravy Wrestling Championships. In what is the 15th edition of the popular Bank Holiday event, punters queued outside the Rose ’N’ Bowl in Stacksteads, Rossendale from midday for the world renowned event.
the competition started off with the wrestlers lined up facing the crowd and introducing themselves to rapturous applause.Once the introductions and niceties were out the way it was time for the showdowns. The event was a knockout style competition where the winner of each bout was decided by three judges.
With the rain holding off long enough, punters arrived in droves through the doors of the Rose 'N' Bowl to watch the spectacle and dodge specs of gravy in a relaxed family atmosphere. One of the fighters who won her first round fight was Catherine, 51, who was wrestling as the 'Grumpy Cow'. "But it's such good fun, it's just being ridiculous. I love it, it just brings people into Rossendale from all over the country, the turnout always really good, it's really well supported, it's just mental."
