His first 100 days have been overshadowed by a police investigation into how the SNP was run when Nicola Sturgeon was leader.

And his strategy on independence is mired in confusion and lacking credibility even among his natural supporters.He will instead be grateful to have made the summer without any of the blows he has taken proving fatal. He has also dumped Sturgeon’s “de facto” referendum policy which would have placed an onus on the pro-Yes side winning over 50 per cent of the vote at the general election.
