As if rising sea levels, raging wild fires and toxic air pollution weren’t enough, research has found that humankind is now shrinking the animal kingdom – quite literally. 🔴 Exclusive BawdenTom
weren’t enough, research has found that humankind is now shrinking the animal kingdom – quite literally.and other human activity are leading both to animals within the same species becoming smaller in size, and to bigger animals declining as many smaller animals thrive.this could mean a threat to deer and eagles; while rats and parakeets continue to prosper.
Professor Richard Twitchett, of the Natural History Museum, who led all three research projects, said: “As far as marine animals are concerned, the evidence from past warming events is clear: most animal species which survive times of global warming are smaller than they were beforehand. Body size increases again as conditions return to normal.
His third study, looking at climate change in the past two centuries used the museum’s animal specimens “to see whether there is any evidence of size reduction in marine animals over the past 200 years with Anthropocene [human] warming”. from University College London, finds that human land development also discriminates against bigger species.Adrian Lister, from the Natural History Museum, said: “Ancient mammal extinctions are sometimes thought to be due to overkill of large mammal species by paleolithic hunters. But there is no question in my view that climate change played a major role.
It compared the survival rates of so-called “fast-lived” species, which live for shorter periods of time, reproduce rapidly and tend to be smaller, to “slow-lived” animals, which live for longer and tend to be bigger.
