For politicians, says Stefanie Tompkins, the head of, Ukraine has “taken things from abstract to reality”. America has already increased its defence spending by 5%; Germany has promised to increase its own budget by a third.
Projects currently under way offer a glimpse of the future. One area of focus, says Dr Tompkins, is improving supply chains. Rather than having to transport food, medicine, water and fuel to soldiers in remote locations, raising concerns about cold storage and logistics,hopes to be able to manufacture them all on-site—from protein and petrol to painkillers—using novel biotechnology.This and other military-focused innovations could reshape civilian life.
