who are members of the PCS union will begin in the busy days preceding Christmas, concluding on New Year’s Eve. Strikes will affect Birmingham, Cardiff, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow and Manchester Airports, as well as the Port of Newhaven on the Sussex coast, between 23-26 December and 28-31 December.
The Home Office is providing as little as five days’ training for about 600 military personnel, civil servants and volunteers to support Border Force on strike daysFor travellers, the biggest impact will be on passport control, where arriving passengers can expect delays. A slower immigration experience during this peak travel period could lead to planes being unable to unload and turn around as quickly, producing a domino effect of disruption.
As yet, no cancellations have been announced, with most airlines stating that they intend to operate a full schedule on strike days. However, it has been reported by PA that Border Force has urged airlines to cut their strike-day schedules by up to 30 per cent to allow for reduced staffing. According to data from aviation analyst Cirium, the airports affected by the Border Force strikes are scheduled to see a total of 10,072 arrivals – more than two million seats, half of which will be at Heathrow Airport. Gatwick will see the next biggest impact, followed by Manchester. Cardiff expects 7,424 arrivals during the strike periods. Across all airports, the quietest day for departures and arrivals will be Christmas Day, followed by Christmas Eve.
