An emblem of rebellion towards colonial rule and order, it is the pinnacle of Black expression and liberation

Keyanna Bell, who is based in Toronto, Canada and has Grenadian and Bajan heritage, explains her engagement with j’ouvert as a deeply transcendent and sensory experience saying, “The first time I went to Grenada for j’ouvert, I just remember feeling like I was in a dream. Coming down the stretch at daybreak and seeing all the people around me dancing, marching, and pumping to the jab sounds, horns and drums was incredible.

“Most of my friends can attest to my love for jumping in the j’ouvert bands,” explains Kimhia Toussaint, the co-founder of“There is nothing more freeing, whilst being covered in paint or powder as a form of celebration mixed in with release. The weather often plays no factor. In my heart, j’ouvert is the yang to pretty mas’ yin.”

Shanae Curry, who has Jamaican heritage, saw j’ouvert as an opportunity to gain insight from the elders in her family. She explains, “It was really cool to see my grandmother relive the culture that’s embedded in her from being in the Caribbean to now being [in New York] and just celebrating the same j’ouvert…[I got to see her] in a different kind of element, the element of her that I heard about for decades.

For me, Jab represents the pinnacle of black expression and liberation. No amount of suppressing, or attempting to suppress, who we are and who we became in spite of colonial subjectivity, has the ability to sever our aptitude for redefinition.
