Jackie says she would love a salary of £50,000 a year and is bracing herself for a hefty jump in her mortgage repayment later this year
I became a teacher in 2021, having accepted my place on the training programme the week before the first lockdown. Having complemented most of my training online, I was thrown in the deep end teaching kids in a classroom, but I absolutely love it. I teach English at a secondary school, earning £29,800 a year before tax. My monthly take-home pay is about £1,750. I will move up to the M3 pay band in September.
I sometimes do extra work as a tutor. If I have two students a week, who have a one-hour session each, I make £240 a month, charging a rate of £30 an hour. I also occasionally do extra work as an examiner. Marking time is quite intense, I mark around 300 papers and it’s roughly £5 per paper but it’s paid over a period of about three months in different amounts.I don’t believe I am motivated by money. I’ve always wanted to have a meaningful job that would enable me to help people.
Before I became a teacher, the pensionable age used to terrify me, and mandatory workplace pensions felt arbitrary. Since becoming a teacher, I feel a little better about retirement, but my pension could still be subject to legislative changes. Everyone outside teaching seems to be under the impression that teacher’s pensions are protected from external issues like a worsening economy or legislative changes. In reality, our pensions are just as vulnerable as everyone else’s.
To my mind, there is space for decentralised currency in the market, but given the recent dip and association with criminal activity, it needs a revamp. I would be willing to invest in cryptocurrency, as I know that early investors of Bitcoin reaped the rewards. When more legislation and protection is in place, I would be willing to invest half of my money into cryptocurrency. I will, however, be sitting tight until that happens.
