Children in nursery part-time, and spend the non-nursery days being looked after by their dadwith my first child in 2019, I stood in the general election. My four-month-old came everywhere with me, door-knocking, hustings, Christmas fairs – the lot. My second child came along almost straight away and so the way in which costs quickly started spiralling with two children came as a surprise.
Despite the fact that with our costs we’d be better off if Alex didn’t work and looked after the children all the time, we decided that we’d make it work by relying on my salary for our other outgoings and Alex would go part-time. He spends half the week teaching and the other half looking after our kids.
Things have got slightly better in the last few months as our eldest turned three and so we started benefitting from more childcare support – the so-called “30 free hours for over-threes”. However, this slogan is misleading. Those 30 free hours still end up costing us £3,516 per year – so while the free hours do mean we pay less than we used to, they’re not technically “free”.
