A third of British holidaymakers who are planning trips to Europe this year will take their own car or hire a rental vehicle when they get there France, Spain and Italy are among the countries with emission rules in place efeatherstone_ reports

Toulouse The country’s clean air policy requires both French and foreign drivers to buy and display a Crit’Air sticker on their vehicle’s windscreen that identifies its emission levels. It costs €4.61 , including postage, and is valid for the lifetime of the vehicle or for as long as it stays legible. The stickers are sent by post, so holidaymakers will need to apply it good time before their trip.

Each vehicle is given a number between 0 and 5 . Vehicles that are assigned a Crit’Air 3,4 and 5 rating can be banned or restricted from some areas. Temporary measures can be brought in when air pollution levels are high. Certain vehicles can be refused entry to French low emission zones based on the sticker displayed on the windscreen, either all the time or on certain days where air pollution levels are dangerously high. Not all vehicles are eligible, including cars registered before January 1997 and motorbikes and scooters registered before June 2000.

Motorists who are found driving without a sticker, or not adhering to the restrictions, face a fine of €68. Fines are given out by police officers. Maximum fines are set to rise to €750. However, a new classification of “zones de vigliance” was announced earlier this month. This will be used for built-up areas where air pollution levels have not exceed a limit. Places that have acceded the limit will still be classified as low-emission zones. Vigilance zones will still operate under Crit’Air schemes, but will not be required to ban certain vehicles.
