Since the age of 15, every single time I am asked to write a shopping list, I will inevitably, at some point, add the word “femidoms”. I have never, in all my life, bought a femidom. Shopping lists, like lonely hearts ads, receipts and for sale notices, have always provided onlookers with a truly fascinating, occasionally surprising look into the lives of strangers.
After years of interviewing people who have undergone rigorous media training, I now believe that you would get a more true sense of a public figure – a politician, an actor, a business person – by reading five of their shopping lists than most of us can manage in a 1,000 word profile. Throw in what kind of carpet they have in their hallway, what cassettes their parents had in the glovebox and what time they go to bed and I think we’d know them entirely.
