How City’s historic treble win has made Manchester ‘football capital of the world’
Last week, consultancy Brand Finance named City the most valuable club in the world for the first time, with a worth of €1.5bn , overtaking Real Madrid. Dr Nicolas Scelles, a senior lecturer in sport finance at Manchester Met University, said the city stood to benefit enormously from its sporting profile.. “Especially in modern football where money is more and more present.
Based on modelling from previous studies, Dr Scelles believes City’s treble success could be worth another £100m a year in revenue. City’s owners recently signalled their intent to keep investing in the club by a planning application for what the club says would be a £300m investment in the Etihad Stadium, expanding the capacity for fans above 60,000 and adding a hotel, sky bar and fan zone.
