🛒 Brexit checks have pushed up household food costs by £210 ⬇️ luciemheath explains what foods are driving the increase and who it affects most
In short: new checks on goods post-Brexit have driven up food costs for consumers here in the UK.
These non-tariff barriers include new comprehensive customs checks, rules of origin requirements and sanitary and phytosanitary measures for trade in animals and plants. Vegetables such as onions, carrots and broccoli are less affected by new post-Brexit checks and therefore have not been responsible for the increase in prices. The increase in prices has not been felt evenly across the UK, with researchers finding that the poorest have experienced a disproportionate rise in the cost of living as a result of post-Brexit trading.
