The September heatwave is expected to last through the weekend, with temperatures as high as 33°C forecast on Saturday
Thursday was the fourth day with temperatures in excess of 30°C recorded in the UK, with high temperatures expected to continue through the weekend, peaking as high as 33°C on Saturday.
“We’ve got this high pressure just to the east of the UK and that’s basically blocking everything here where it is and then we’ve got this low pressure just to the west of Portugal, and because of the two interacting we’re drawing in southeasterly wind from the continent so that’s bringing in all the warmth from France and Spain,” he said.
“As we go through Monday and Tuesday we’ll see cooler air making its way south-eastwards across the country so that as we go into next week temperatures will start to return back to seasonal average,” he said. However, he added that it will take longer to return to normal in the south-east, where temperatures in the mid-20s are still expected on Tuesday.
“Longer range models look as if towards the end of September and into early October…the most likely scenario at the moment is to see a further spell of higher pressure developing across the UK, which will bring more settled weather once again,” he said.
