Hong Chau: 'I filmed The Whale with an eight-week-old baby – I was pumping between takes' ⬇️ Interview
When she thinks of her best meal, she thinks of her mother, a Vietnamese refugee who raised her in New Orleans: “I did not grow up getting to go to restaurants. At first, she said no to the script, because she didn’t want to be separated from her own young child. “When I was working on, she was eight weeks old and she was not an easy baby. She’s a great baby, but not an easy baby. I was pumping in between set-ups and they had a separate room for me in case I wanted to bring the baby or if I needed to have some privacy. The first AD, this sweet Italian man, said: ‘You’re so courageous to come and do this movie and be apart from your baby.
The emotions extended to its premiere in Venice. Fraser, who despite the online criticism is a firm favourite for the Best Actor Oscar, received a lengthy standing ovation. Chau was in tears. “I thought: ‘Oh, I’ve seen it already, I’m not going to cry’,” she recalls. “I was totally a mess. Then I was also very moved about Brendan, who put so much into that role, and I was just really happy for him.
For Chau to work these days, a film has to be worth it. “It’s not that I don’t love cinema as much,” she clarifies, “but my career is not my priority any more.”, and her upcoming slate, the work is finding Chau, as it should – there’s a certain category of actor who radiates intelligence and a churning mind on screen, and Chau is one of those treasures.
