The courtroom windows were open all day, blowing cold air into the room, so Prudence wore her coat for the duration of the hearing. Her landlord was represented by a young barrister in a crisp navy-blue suit. He looked down at his computer unless he was speaking to the judge.“intentionally homeless” This is the situation in Britain today: someone like Prudence may not earn enough to comfortably afford her private rent, but earnsto secure the scarce and elusive resource that is social housing. The social safety net in this country has been so stripped back by years of austerity it barely hangs on by a thread.
