Parents can make a claim for Child Benefit 48 hours after the birth has been registered.
HM Revenue and Customs is urging new parents to start claiming Child Benefit and receive up to £1,248 each year to help provide financial support for their first child. In a series of posts on social media, HMRC has been encouraging people not to miss out on the benefit which offers more than just regular payments every four weeks.
By claiming Child Benefit, you also get an allowance for each child, usually paid every four weeks and a National Insurance number without them having to apply for one - they’ll usually get this shortly before they turn 16 years old. If you choose not to get Child Benefit payments, you should still make a claim to get the other advantages.Only one person can get Child Benefit for a child, and there is no limit to how many children you can claim for.
If you or your partner earn over £50,000 If either your or your partner’s ‘adjusted net income’ is over £50,000 a year, you may have to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge. You can work out if your adjusted net income is over £50,000 using the Child Benefit tax calculator on GOV.UK here.
