Disputes over national identities and minorities are emerging as an obstacle to the bloc’s expansion in eastern Europe

It seems like ancient history now, but for 27 years after communist Yugoslavia’s collapse a passionate dispute over Alexander the Great impeded the EU’s enlargement in the Balkans. The quarrel centred on whether the warrior king, who died 2,300 years ago in Babylon, was Greek or Macedonian. It formed part of a wider struggle between Greece and the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia over the symbols and substance of national identity, cultural heritage and territory.

Sections of the Ukrainian political elite and society revere Bandera. However, as the prospect of EU enlargement draws closer, other regional disagreements are coming to the surface. Take Albania and Greece, whose relations have deteriorated this year since the arrest of Fredi Beleri, an ethnic Greek politician in the southern Albanian town of Himarë, on suspicion of buying votes.
