The Pavilion Theatre building, which had been an entertainment venue on Toxteth's Lodge Lane since 1908, has been taken over and will become an UMRAH Supermarket.
Known as 'The Pivvy', the venue was converted from a theatre into a bingo hall in 1961, but still hosted stage shows and live music. The Beatles played at The Pivvy on April 2, 1962, appearing on the bill with The Waterford Royal Show Band.In 2020, plans to turn the building into a takeaway venue were submitted to Liverpool City Council, however it appears they did not proceed.
UMRAH, which already has a store in Leicester, describes itself as a "retail chain selling a range of grocery items from around the world including African & Caribbean". On its website, the brand says its ethos is: "We strive to purchase the highest quality products at reasonable prices, enabling us to pass the savings on to our customers. Our product range extends beyond most supermarkets, providing real variety in a local outlet, saving our customers time and money on shopping for international food."
