Former watfordfc and Luton keeper Alec Chamberlain discusses rumours suggesting Rob Edwards is poised to be the new manager at Kenilworth Road
Just 53 days after he was shown the door by Watford, Rob Edwards seems set to walk through the door at Luton – and in the process he would become only the second man to manage both clubs.
That means his combined stint at the Watford helm was far, far longer than Edwards’ 10 league and one cup game which came to an end on September 26. More than a decade later he had amassed in excess of 250 appearances for the Hornets, helping win the 1999 Play-Off Final at Wembley and playing in the Premier League.
The buffer for Edwards, should he get the job, between being at Watford and Luton will be nothing like that which Chamberlain enjoyed. “I was out scouting at Luton back at the start of the season, and Watford had played on a Friday night. Rob was at the same game, watching them. He would definitely know what the feeling between Watford and Luton is.
“When we won that famous 4-0 game at Kenilworth Road in 1997, I had to go out in the second half with Watford winning 4-0 already and run towards the Luton end. It was a very diplomatic answer from Chamberlain – but when his daughter added that his grandson has a Watford FC water bottle and no merchandise from Luton, it’s a little clearer where his loyalties really are!The 26 who have represented both Watford and Luton also include Andre Gray, who averaged better than a goal every two games for the Hatters but spent a far less successful five years at Vicarage Road.
