The collisions are coming for Broncos' Javonte Williams and he's no stranger to them. “I can’t wait for that.” After a rapid recovery from an ACL tear, the third-year RB is barreling toward an expansive role in Sean Payton's offense. ✍️ NickKosmider
The collisions are coming for Williams, who will play at some point during the preseason, coach Sean Payton has said. But it was a different kind of play in practice last week that helped paint the picture of the final stages of an incredible recovery. Williams was running a short route near the left sideline when he saw quarterbackbegin to scramble his way.
One of the Payton-isms heard often since the 59-year-old head coach was hired by the Broncos is “confidence comes from demonstrated ability.” The start-stop-cut-go play was clear evidence of the confidence Williams has in his surgically repaired knee and his overall capacity for doing everything asked of a running back in Payton’s offense.said. “I’ve never seen anyone roll like that fresh off a knee . That’s dope, man. I love it for him. He’s going to be ready and I can’t wait to see it.
“It’s amazing to be able to watch him go through the process the way he did and to be in the space he is right now,” wide receiverWhen Williams left Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas last Oct. 2, his ACL torn and other ligaments damaged, the road ahead was unclear. He was told his recovery could take a calendar year or more — and it could have been worse.
“The doctor told me that if I had a little more damage, it could have been in an even longer timeline,” Williams said. “So just being back out here is a huge confidence boost. I was down on myself a lot, but I’m seeing the brighter side now.”during his senior season at Wallace-Rose High in Teachey, N.C., had never suffered a major injury before. Now, the fiercely independent 23-year-old couldn’t do anything but watch and wait. For two months following surgery, his leg remained stabilized.
“I’ve been doing this since I was a little kid, so when I got this taken away from me it was hard,” Williams said. “But once I started rehabbing, started running and things like that, each week my confidence got bigger and bigger. Now that I’m back on the field, this is the highest it’s ever been.”
