'I can talk to him now and tell him we done it. Promise complete.'
The mother of Harry Dunn, Charlotte Charles, has said that she kissed her son on the night he died and "promised him that UK justice would be done". At the Old Bailey yesterday, October 20, US citizen Anne Sacoolas admitted to killing the 19-year-old by careless driving outside a Northamptonshire airbase in 2019.
Ms Charles said: "That night was and always will be the worst of our lives. But with my family around us and close friends that were there, all witnessed me kiss him on his forehead and his bruised lip, and promise him that UK justice would be done." The campaign to have Sacoolas face a UK court was long one. It began in September 2019, when Sacoolas had diplomatic immunity from prosecution asserted on her behalf by the US Government and she left the UK on a US Air Force plane. For the next few months, the UK government, including foreign secretary Dominic Raab and Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked the US to waive Sacoolas's immunity, but to no avail. At NorthantsLive we're more than just news.
After the UK Government said it was seeking a “virtual trial or process” for Sacoolas, the CPS confirmed in December 2019 that the case would be heard before a UK court. The case was due to take place in January 2022 but was delayed and rescheduled for September 2022. Speaking of her three year battle for justice, Harry's mother said: "It was a road crash. It should never have been this difficult.
"I can say that I do feel proud, of me, of us parents, of Niall , of the whole family. But most of all I feel proud of Harry, because without the values he had when he was with us, I'm not sure we'd have been as strong was we are to get the job done."
