You see, the detail everyone might miss amid this latest Sussex media storm is that, for years, Harry and Meghan told the world they met on a blind date. Now it transpires that was only partially true, because in actual fact, their meeting was far more relatable – and reflective of the contemporary dating landscape.
After giving her seal of approval having seen Harry’s Instagram feed Meghan exchanged numbers with “Prince Haz” and they eventually set up a date. “You’re ON!” he replied to Meghan’s suggestion . They had dinner at Soho House and the rest, as Megz says, is one giant “plot twist” . But let’s go back to the little white lie. Why would the Sussexes hide the fact that they met through Instagram? In today’s digital dating world, it’s an incredibly common way of meeting someone. So much so that I dedicated an entire chapter to the art of sliding into someone’s DMs when writing my book,. Because it is an art, as Harry and Meghan’s story demonstrates. Sure, they may not have necessarily slid into one another’s DMs, but they wouldn’t have met had it not been for the ’gram.
Even in 2022, despite the majority of us are using dating apps or meeting people through social media, online hook-ups are still deemed inferior to real-life ones. Look, I get it. We all fetishise the rom-com-worthy meeting. You know, where two strangers reach for the same tub of hummus in the supermarket, and a discussion about their mutual penchant for chickpeas results in them falling madly in love. It would be a great story to tell at the wedding, sure, but it’s probably not going to happen to you.
